On January 3rd, 2008, the Northfield Skating School directors hosted our second parent meeting of the 2007-08 season. Parent meetings are held before the opening day of each set of lessons. The goals of these evenings are to keep parents and skaters informed and to encourage communication with our skating families. Our Jan 3rd meeting covered these topics:
- Benefits of skating at all levels
- US Figure Skating and the Basic Skills Program: the FUNdamentals of skating
- Policies and expectations of our program
- How to Help Your Child Get the Most Out of Skating
- Questions!
We were thrilled that about 75% of new parents as well as a few returning parents and even a handful of skaters attended. If you were not able to attend, feel free to contact me to be emailed a copy of the presentation.

Beginning this session, NSS has the pleasure of welcoming six Skating Assistants to our staff. Skating Assistants are volunteers with a love for skating and working with children. They help Skating Instructors conduct group lessons and provide personal attention to skaters during lessons and practice. Of our 6 Skating Assistants, 4 are current NSS advanced skaters and 2 are college students with backgrounds in skating and leadership. NSS now boasts a total of 15 Skating Instructors and 6 Assistants – our largest, most experienced staff yet.

We are currently looking for volunteers to help with our check-in and merchandise table during our first lesson and to help at the merchandise table each week. If you would like to volunteer for an hour slot during any week of lessons, please contact Carey The volunteer sign-up list will also be posted at the arena during lessons.
Volunteering during your child’s lesson time is a great way to get engaged and involved in the program! Plus, all volunteers will be provided coffee and blankets to keep warm while helping us out. We truly appreciate your help!
Thanks to all who took the time to come to the Armory during the rainy MEA break to stay informed about NSS! If you weren’t able to make the meeting, you may contact me to receive a copy of the presentation.
